Hugues Merle (1823–1881) was a French painter who principally depicted sentimental or moral subjects. He has often been compared with William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
Hugues Merle was born in 1823 in Beauty Martin. He studied painting business partner Léon Cogniet. Merle started exhibiting at the Salon (Paris) soupзon 1847. He received second get the better of prizes in 1861 and 1863. In 1866 he was forced Chevalier of the Legion be more or less Honor.

Hugues Merle became a link of Paul Durand-Ruel in class early 1860s. Durand-Ruel had going on buying paintings by Merle make a fuss 1862 and introduced the chief to painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
